Captioning Captures the Votes

On March 22, 2016, a local Kirkwood, MO fundraising event was held for State senator Deb Lavendar who is seeking re-election from the 90th district of Missouri. Guest of honor was Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster who is a candidate for governor of Missouri. He spoke about the Missouri political scene and the need to retain the high standards of excellence that Deb Lavendar has shown in her years of service to the constituents of the state of Missouri. CART captioning was utilized to ensure that all in attendance could read the words that were spoken by both Ms. Lavendar and AG Koster. Please remember to vote in the primary election to be held on August 2, 2016.Lavendar 23march2016 Koster 23march2016

Lauren E. Storck, CCAC founder and president

I have made the acquaintance of Patti White through her participation in the CCAC, an official non-profit volunteer organization dedicated solely to captioning advocacy internationally (please see (http://CCACaptioning.org). The CCAC welcomes users, providers, and so many others who support our Mission, and Patti has been a dedicated participant whom we value highly.

Through Patti’s business contacts, her work experience and expertise, Patti has successfully implemented captioning into new markets, empowering individuals to more fully participate in meetings, conventions, and public forums. Her attention on detail helps to improve communication among all members of society.

Patti recently provided “live event captioning” (CART) for an important event – a candidate speaking to her constituents. This is wonderful and we applaud Patti and Good Sport Captioning for making it happen (read more on http://ccacaptioning.org/captions-capture-the-votes/.)

She is a leader in this profession by happily providing training and public education. We need many more students to enter this field of study who will then become experienced providers for a huge population of people of all ages who need quality services. Patti reaches out to students and other professionals to educate them about the benefits of entering this remarkable field.

Finally, the Sports events that Patti captions are surely a delight to so many thousands of fans. These fans may be unable to hear the public address announcements in sports venues, and Good Sport Captioning assures fans can fully participate in game day activities through scoreboard captioning.

Differentiating CART and Closed Captioning

Differentiating CART and Closed Captioning

CART and closed captioning are often mistaken by consumers. In order to understand the difference between the two terms, first it’s important to understand that there are different methods for providing spoken word to individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Captioning involves displaying spoken word through an encoder onto a television or projection screen for a live or recorded event. According to experts, more than 100 million Americans a year utilize closed captioning to follow the audio portion of TV broadcasts. Captioning is used by the deaf or hard of hearing people as well as the general population in noisy settings such as a gym or restaurant.
CART Captioning, on the other hand, is capturing spoken word and displaying it for view by consumer (s), either on a laptop computer or projected on a large screen. CART provides a verbatim translation of every spoken word including environmental sounds, and it’s up to the consumer to decide what information is relevant to them. CART on a larger screen is ideal for group settings whereas a laptop is ideal for smaller settings, e.g. high school, college classes and other small gatherings.

It’s important to note that both methods use the same basic process involving a stenographer taking notes on a stenography machine that is connected to a laptop for projection on an overhead projector for view.
